Immigration Museum

Immigration Museum

The former Customs House building now houses the Melbourne Immigration Museum. Previously, customs officers recorded the entry and exit of all goods into Victoria in this building. They were also responsible for the administration of the White Australia Policy which was infamously aimed at excluding immigrants on the basis of race. Now, the building stands as a record to the complex, challenging, uplifting and sometimes heartbreaking stories of the many migrating people who have made Victoria their home. As a West Indian-Australian, Maxine Clarke is intimately aware that the location of this important museum is no unintentional irony.
