Although it’s technically called Campbell Arcade, hardly anyone will know where you’re talking about unless you say you’re looking for the Degraves Street Subway. Opened in 1955, the ‘black granite columns, pick wall tiles, neat shops and show windows’ have been greatly admired by frenetic commuters, lonesome zinesters and fringe dweller art types. When last we checked, there was the specialist comic and zine store Sticky Institute, the very excellent Corky St Clair, the independently lovely Cat’s Meow, Wax Museum and Muff.
By now, however, Emilie Zoey Baker and some other night-time crazy has probably installed themselves in a wall box to write an anime version of On the Road, while wearing a Christian Dior leopard print jumper and listening to Run DMC.
